Looking For A Fun New Hobby?

April 3rd, 2019. Cedar City, Utah

A hobby is one of the best ways for someone to stay occupied and do something they enjoy. Nonetheless, in some cases, you may have to stay at home or go to a facility for a hobby. A kendama, however, has a compact size that allows anyone to take it anywhere they want. His love for kendama inspired full time student, Reece Alvarado, from Southern Utah University (SUU) to start a kendama club.

Originating in Japan, kendama is a skill toy the Japanese used to teach grade school students hand-eye coordination. Over the past 15 years, kendama has spread all over the world bringing various cultures together. Through his club, Reece found a way to unite students at SUU under one common interest: kendama. “It was amazing to see the positive response from those interested and how much they improved in a short time-period” stated Reece Alvarado.

Reece’s kendama club was part of Southern Utah University’s EDGE Project. The EDGE project gives students the opportunity to engage in personal projects outside of typical classes. These projects give students an “edge” by providing them with professional experience. Reece Alvarado believed his project served as a solid foundation for him to improve his leadership skills for his future career as a mechanical engineer.###
